ScienceDaily (Mar. 25, 2012) ? Patients with high blood sugar run an increased risk of dying if they have a heart attack, and diabetics are less likely to survive in-hospital cardiac arrest than non-diabetics, reveals research at the Sahlgrenska Academy, at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden.
Diabetes is common among patients with coronary artery disease, and this is a potentially lethal combination: a thesis from the University of Gothenburg’s Sahlgrenska Academy reveals that diabetes in coronary artery disease patients brings a significantly increased risk of premature death.
Smaller chance of surviving
Doctoral student and researcher Petur Petursson investigated the connection between blood sugar disorders and survival following heart attacks and cardiac arrest. His thesis shows that patients with diabetes have a smaller chance of surviving in-hospital cardiac arrest. Diabetes and pre-diabetes are also associated with a less favourable prognosis following coronary artery surgery.
“Type 2 diabetics with suspected coronary artery disease who are on insulin therapy have lower survival,” he explains. “We’ve not been able to demonstrate the exact cause, but much of it may be because those on insulin therapy have more severe disease.”
Need for careful management
Petur Petursson says that the results underline the need for careful management of patients with coronary artery disease and the importance of accurately diagnosing and managing blood sugar disorders.
“Medical personnel can pretty much assume that coronary artery disease patients will have some kind of blood sugar disorder, so there must be established strategies for managing these disorders at every heart clinic in the country.”
The thesis Aspects of Abnormal Glucose Regulation in Various Manifestations of Coronary Artery Disease was defended on 23 February.

The Ithaca College Choir, conducted by Lawrence Doebler, was on the road again this March.??The tour will feature works by Frank Martin, Francis Poulenc, Antonio Lotti, Vincent Persichetti, Josef Rheinberger, Carol Barnett, Sally Lamb McCune, Robert Fountain and Moses Hogan.? The tour performances in each city were open to all, including Ithaca College alumni and local students in the area.?
The final tour stop will be in Ford Hall this Saturday, March 24th at 8:15pm.? If you can’t be there, the performance will be web streamed live at www.ithaca.edu/music/live
The following was written in The River Reporter following the Ithaca College Choir performance.?
“Heeding the advice of everyone within earshot, I soaked up some rays (yay, spring!) and looked at directions for the Lumberland Town Hall, which was hosting the Ithaca College Choir on Sunday, as the singers made Glen Spey, NY the fourth stop in their 2012 tour. Doing some homework before the concert, I discovered that the choir has performed major concerts at some pretty impressive venues over the years, including New York?s? St. Patrick?s Cathedral, Alice Tully Hall, the Brooklyn Academy of Music and Carnegie Hall.
The choir?s web site (www.Ithaca.edu/music) also informed me that ?In addition to their a capella tradition, the choir has performed with the Cayuga Chamber Orchestra, the Ithaca College Symphony Orchestra, Chamber orchestra, and wind ensemble, as well as other professional ensembles.? Suitably impressed, I took my seat with the rest of the sold-out crowd, many of whom were regulars for the Town of Lumberland?s
(www.townoflumberland.org) popular Cultural Series, founded in 1985, which ?promotes a variety of fine programs including concerts of a professional nature that appeal to the residents of the Delaware Valley, the Tri-States and the local communities.?
Having attended college in Binghamton and grown up in the Finger Lakes, I was familiar with the Ithaca College Choir and aware of their stellar reputation. I was not, however, prepared to be struck dumb by the incredible performance that played out that afternoon, nor expecting the overwhelming wave of emotion that permeated the hall as the performers made a personal connection with each member of the audience.
Conductor Lawrence Doebler was equally emotional as he explained what was about to transpire: ?We want you, the audience, to be involved in the text. You may not want to consult your program during the performance, since the choir will be looking at you… and we encourage you to look back.?
Unsure as to what he meant, I quickly glanced at the notes for the choirs? 34th annual tour, aptly titled ?Get on Board,? as the 50 or so members entered (to pre-show thunderous applause) in their formal gowns and tuxedoes. Their gorgeous-to-a-fault faces were shining as the singers took their places, angled toward the crowd to allow maximum eye contact and a hush fell over the hall as their voices filled the space.
Immediately, it became clear that this was to be no ordinary concert. Doeblers? words echoed in my mind as I scanned the group and the audience simultaneously. True to the conductors? word, the kids were looking directly at us, holding their dramatic gaze before moving on, their voices swelling to crescendo before dropping to melodious whispers as they performed an eclectic program, which included Sally Lamb McCunes? ?Crossing,? Vincent Persichettis? ?Kyrie,? Frank Martins? ?Gloria? alongside traditional African-American spirituals.
Amazing vocal control and impeccable arrangements were enhanced by stunning solo turns from Alto Adiza Jibril, bass Stephen Wilkins, first soprano Sarah Jenkins and incandescent star-in-the-making soprano Ana Strachan, whose name will be lighting up opera marquees around the world, mark my words. There are not enough superlatives to make my point. Suffice it to say that the goose bumps remained throughout my ride home and I?m already making plans for their exciting appearance at Lincoln Center next year, while searching the internet for recordings that must surely exist.
While unable to sing along (unless completely alone!), I join the legions of fans of the Ithaca College Choir as I celebrate, celebrate… and dance to the music!”

(Reuters) – A confluence of factors ranging from a robust advertising market to the growing importance of retransmission fees and more funding for deals, is setting the stage for a new wave of television station mergers over the next 12-24 months.
Newport Television, a group of 56 stations owned by buyout shop Providence Equity Partners, is the latest company to hit the auction block. Citing sources familiar with the matter, Reuters reported exclusively on Friday that Providence had retained Moelis & Company to “explore strategic alternatives,” including a possible sale of the company.
One of these sources described the process as in its “real early stages” and said it was premature to talk about bidders or valuation.
A deal for Newport Television, if completed, would mark the latest in a new wave of merger activity among local TV station owners.
Just last fall, Sinclair Broadcast Group bought 15 stations from Freedom Communications and Four Points Media for a combined $585 million. Around the same time, E.W. Scripps bought nine stations from McGraw-Hill for $212 million.
Those deals raised optimism among both potential buyers and sellers for a break in the consolidation drought that started in 2008 during the economic downturn, leaving banks tight-fisted and the advertising-dependent television business uncertain.
Now, more funding is available from banks to finance deals as the economy and the outlook for TV stations improves, said Mark Fratrik, chief economist at research firm BIA/Kelsey.
“I think it will be an uptick from previous years. I’m sure there are established TV groups that are looking for possibilities,” he said.
A return to healthy ad revenues, boosted this year by the Olympics and the U.S. presidential election, puts the larger companies in a better position to make moves, added Jimmy Schaeffler of The Carmel Group.
“Car and political ads are coming back. It’s going to be a good year for both,” said Schaeffler, who listed Hearst Television as another potential station acquirer along with Sinclair.
MagnaGlobal forecasts local TV advertising growth of roughly 3.7 percent this year. A representative for Hearst declined comment. Calls to Sinclair Chief Financial Officer David Amy were not returned.
Lin TV Corp is one of the larger companies forecasting a pickup of deals ahead. “I really believe that 2012 will be a year of some significant M&A in the industry,” Lin Chief Executive Vince Sadusky told analysts on a conference call this month, citing improving debt markets as one reason.
Sadusky also said scale was becoming more important for players wanting to be in the business for the long term.
Size is key when negotiating with cable operators who pay broadcasters to transmit their signals, a significant revenue stream in addition to advertising. It’s simple math: more stations equals more leverage to negotiate higher fees.
“Our view is that more television broadcast consolidation is necessary for station owners to have more clout and negotiating leverage when they sit down with their network partners and/or (cable distributors),” wrote Gabelli & Co Inc analyst Barry Lucas in a summary report of the investment firm’s “Entertainment & Broadcasting Conference” held on March 15 in New York.
EXPLORING OPTIONS
In addition to Providence’s Newport Television, Nexstar Broadcasting Group is also looking at options. Last July, the company said it was exploring strategic alternatives including a possible sale. And just last week, Young Broadcasting, owner of 10 stations, said CEO Tony Cassara was exiting to pursue other interests including “ownership of other broadcast stations.”
Nexstar and Lin were both on the buy side of consolidation last year. But Gabelli’s Lucas thinks that both could be opportunistic sellers this year.
Lin TV, which owns 34 stations in 15 mid-sized markets across the country, has been owned by private equity firm Hicks, Muse, Tate & Furst since 1998. In May 2007, the buyout shop hired a financial adviser to explore a possible sale.
Though no deal materialized, the firm’s 14-year ownership of Lin – which is twice the typical exit horizon for private equity firms – led Lucas to surmise that it “would still like to monetize its holdings.”
Not unlike Newport Television and Lin TV, many television station groups not part of a larger parent company, such as Belo Corp or Gannett Co Inc, are owned by private equity firms that have reached their exit horizon. Further, these private equity-owned station groups are generally small in size and need to be part of a bigger network of stations to take advantage of economies of scale.
For instance, Four Points, one of the companies Sinclair bought last year, was owned by Cerberus Capital Management and only consisted of seven stations.
The biggest efficiencies come from owning two stations in one market, because they are cheaper to operate since one infrastructure and back office team can serve two stations, allowing the owner to keep more of the revenue.
The Federal Communications Commission is considering loosening its rules which currently allow companies to own up to two stations in a single market, depending on the size of the market and other factors.
The limits are meant to keep one owner from exerting too much influence in a market but investors argue that television faces increasing competition from the Internet as a source of news and entertainment.
